What is a Short-term Upsell Campaign?

Our Upgrade Flow is designed to run continuously to send an upsell email every 6 months (by default) to customers on recurring monthly subscriptions.

However, some of our clients have expressed a wish to send upsell emails more immediately. In this case, we recommend sending a single email to each customer over the course of one month - we call this a Short-term Upsell Campaign.

How to set up a Short-term Upsell Campaign

  1. Go to Nudge Automations in your account at app.smartraise.net and click the New Automation button.

  2. Set the basic details:

    1. Select Email message and Payment provider
    2. Set the trigger to Recurring Payment
    3. Set an interval, like 10 minutes or 2 weeks. Ask yourself: “how long after my last donation would I be happy to receive an Upsell email?” The interval must be greater than 0 to qualify the automation as non-mandatory.

  3. Optionally add filters:

    1. Set Amount filters if you’re using Tiers.

      In this example for a default Tier 2 email:

      • Tier 2 starts by asking people to increase their donation to ÂŁ10. Therefore, this email should only go to people donating less than 10
      • Tier 1 starts by asking people to increase their donation to ÂŁ5. Therefore, Tier 2 emails should go to people donating greater than or equal to 5 (ÂŁ5 or more)
    2. Set Tag or Source filters if you’re segmenting by previous interactions.

      Tags and Source usually indicate which form people used and the options they selected

    3. Set the Time since signup filter if you want to exclude people who joined very recently.

      It’s best practise to wait a while before asking someone to increase their donation

How to run a Short-term Upsell Campaign

Start the campaign

To run a Short-term Upsell Campaign, choose a date to start and Activate your Automation on that date:

The Automation will then send an email each time a Recurring Payment comes through belonging to someone who fits the criteria (correct payment provider, email opt-in status, filters etc).

End the campaign

It is important to end the campaign before it triggers a second time for each person.

Therefore, when sending to monthly donors in response to the Recurring Payment trigger, you should choose an end date no later than 1 month from the start date.

Make sure to login and Deactivate your automation on that date:
